I use pure watercolour and work on Saunders Waterford 300lb (638gms) NOT paper, unstretched, as I like to use both hands whilst painting. Using my right hand to paint and the left to move the paper around, sometimes working upside down or tilting the paper for various effects.
The technique I use is highly spontaneous and as I stand to paint, I am ready at any moment to make use of the way pigment reacts on the paper. I also spend more time thinking through the paint process and the colours to be used than actually painting. When composing I like to take a long time studying the scene, and then when ready, paint it, distilling the image and leaving out unnecessary detail. I paint directly on to the paper, and do not use pencils. To me, pencils are just another barrier that slows up the process. I also make use of 'happy accidents' reacting quickly when things do not go exactly to plan, letting the pigment dictate the eventual outcome.
Capturing the different moods, and the essence of nature is paramount. The wildness and loneliness of empty beaches and marshes, draws me time after time, painting nature that is still in control, and where man should take care.
When painting trees, I like to listen and enjoy the sound of the wind through the leaves, and the howling gales in the winter. Capturing movement, time, mood mystery and strength. What have they witnessed over the centuries, when we just pass them by.
